Good save the date wording says four things: your names, the date, the place and "formal invitation to follow." Keep it to four or five lines, leave times, dress code and the RSVP for the invitation, and send the link in a short personal message to each household.
The 40 examples below use our demo couple, Sofia and Nico, who marry in Camogli, on the Italian Riviera, on Saturday, June 12, 2027; [link] is where yours goes. The save the date is the first step in when to send wedding invitations, so match its tone to the invitation that follows.
The four lines every save the date needs
A save the date is a short notice, sent ahead of the invitation, asking guests to keep one day free: four lines, and anything more belongs to the invitation. What to say on one:
| Line | Write it as | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Your names | As on the invitation | Sofia & Nico | Guests link the two |
| 2. The date | Weekday, month as a word | Saturday, June 12, 2027 | 06.12 is December 6 in Europe |
| 3. The place | City and country, or the signed venue | Camogli, Italy | Enough to plan travel |
| 4. The promise | "Formal invitation to follow" | Invitation to follow | More is coming; no reply yet |
Who is invited ("Marta and Luca", "the Hale family") goes in the message, which settles plus-ones early.
Send it 6–12 months before the wedding, or 9–12 months for a destination wedding (Zola suggests 4–6 months for a local wedding and 8–12 for a destination one, checked October 19, 2026). More in when to send save the dates.
Carte Postale's Save the Date ends on these four lines and an add-to-calendar button.

What not to write on a save the date yet
Leave out anything that can still change or that asks guests for something.
| Leave out | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremony and reception times | They can still move | The invitation |
| An RSVP request or reply-by date | There's nothing to answer yet | The invitation, 8–12 weeks before |
| Gifts or a registry | It asks before it invites | The invitation or website |
| Dress code | Unless guests must plan it (black tie, abroad) | The invitation |
Send a save the date only to people you're certain to invite: it promises an invitation. Our digital save the date guide covers designs and cost. A Save the Date on its own is $79 (or the equivalent in your currency) with two languages, and it's included with Premium.

Frequently asked questions
What do you write on a save the date?
Write your names, the date, the place and "formal invitation to follow." Spell out the weekday and month. Times, dress code, gifts and the RSVP wait for the invitation.
What should a save the date message say?
It should greet the guest by name, give the news in one line, include the link and say the invitation will follow. Sign it, and send it privately to each household.
How do you word a save the date for a destination wedding?
Use the four usual lines plus one about travel: the nearest airport, the weekend's dates or "travel details to follow." Send it 9–12 months ahead.
Should a save the date mention the reception?
Only when it's on a different day or in a different place. Otherwise the date and city cover both. If you marry abroad and celebrate at home later, name the date each guest is invited to.
How do you send a save the date on WhatsApp?
Paste the link into a private chat with each household, with a short message naming who is invited. Send it to yourself first to check the preview, and avoid group chats, which expose everyone's number.
