Digital wedding invitations with RSVP put the reply inside the invitation: guests open one link, accept or decline in a few taps and add each person's name and dietary needs, and you see every answer as it arrives. Set the reply-by date about four weeks before the wedding, and use personal links to control plus-ones.
Below: what guests see, what to ask, the deadline, plus-ones, reminders, the spreadsheet, a comparison of RSVP tools and a set-up checklist to copy.
What RSVP means, and what changes online
RSVP stands for répondez s'il vous plaît, French for "please reply". On a wedding invitation it asks each guest to say whether they will come, by a set date. Strictly, "please RSVP" says "please" twice, so formal invitations write "The favor of a reply is requested by the fifteenth of May" instead.
A digital wedding invitation with RSVP is an invitation guests open on their phone or computer from a link, with the reply form built into it: no card to post, no form in another tab.
Interest is climbing fast: in Google Trends, "digital wedding invitations with rsvp" is a rising query related to digital wedding invitations in the US, up 400% (checked October 19, 2026). If you are still weighing the format itself, start with our guide to digital wedding invitations.
Here is what changes when the reply moves online:
| Reply card by post | RSVP inside a digital invitation | |
|---|---|---|
| What the guest does | Fills in a card, finds a stamp, posts it | Taps accept or decline, types names, sends |
| When you know | When the post arrives | The moment they send it |
| Dietary needs | Whatever fits on the card | Per person, in their own words |
| Changing an answer | A phone call | The same link, again |
| Cost of the reply itself | A printed card and return postage per guest | Included with the invitation |
How digital wedding invitations with RSVP work
An online wedding RSVP works in three moves: you share a link, each guest replies inside the invitation, and every answer lands in one private list.
What guests see
- A message from you with the link, by WhatsApp, text or email.
- The invitation opens in their browser, often with a moment of its own: a seal broken, a door knocked, a cork popped.
- They read the day in sections: the program, the venue and map, the dress code, where to stay.
- They reach the reply, usually last, with the reply-by date above it.
- They choose "Joyfully accepts" or "Regretfully declines", then add the name of each person coming and any dietary needs.
- They send, and the invitation thanks them.
When the reply feels like part of the invitation rather than a form bolted on, it is a pleasure to send. In our demo for the Bulles design, the cork pops to open it and every reply ends with two glasses clinking. Try it as a guest would:
If your guests speak different languages, the reply should be in theirs too: see our guide to bilingual wedding invitations.
What you see
A good RSVP list updates as guests reply and shows:
- Totals: who is coming, who has declined and (with named guests) who hasn't answered.
- Each reply in full: names, dietary needs, any song request or note.
- An export to a spreadsheet (CSV) for seating and final numbers.
No account, no app
Guests should never need an account, a password or an app to reply. Every sign-in step is a reason to put the reply off, and "later" is how deadlines are missed.
Check before you choose a tool: if you turn on "Limit to 1 response" in Google Forms, Google's help page says respondents must sign in to a Google Account. On Veiloria, guests open the link in any phone or computer browser and reply without creating an account.
For the guests who find any link daunting, print the invitation's QR code on a card: our guide to the wedding invitation QR code shows how. There's more on helping grandparents in digital wedding invitations for older guests.
What to ask in your RSVP
Ask only what you will act on: attendance, each guest's full name and their dietary needs are the essentials, and everything else is optional.
The essentials
| Question | Why you need it | Wording that works |
|---|---|---|
| Will you attend? | Your headcount | Joyfully accepts / Regretfully declines |
| How many in your party? | Seats and covers | How many of you will be joining us? |
| Each guest's full name | Place cards, seating plan, door list | Please tell us the name of each guest |
| Dietary requirements, per person | The caterer's list | Any allergies or dietary requirements? |
| An email address | To reach them if plans change | Where can we send updates? |
Ask about requirements, not preferences: "allergies or dietary requirements" brings back "celiac" and "no shellfish"; "food preferences" brings back dislikes.
Helpful extras
- Children: "Will any children be attending?" (Leave it out for an adults-only wedding, and say so elsewhere in the invitation.)
- A song request: "A song that will get you dancing" fills the dance floor and gives you a playlist made by your guests.
- A note for the two of you: you'll keep these.
- Which events: for a welcome dinner, ceremony and brunch, ask per event. Evening-only guests deserve their own invitation: see evening reception invitations.
- Meal choice: only for a plated dinner with a choice of mains.
For a full bank of questions by wedding type, read wedding RSVP questions.
What not to ask
- Why they can't come. A decline is complete on its own.
- What they plan to give. Gifts belong in their own section, never in the reply.
- The name of a plus-one you haven't offered. If the place isn't there, don't make room for it in the form.
- Information you won't use. If no one will read the answer, drop the question.
Setting the reply-by date
Set the reply-by date about four weeks before the wedding: two weeks to chase the last replies, then two weeks before your caterer's final numbers (ask for their exact cut-off and work back from it). Invitations go out 8–12 weeks before the day, or 3–4 months if guests will travel. Our guide on when to send wedding invitations has the full month-by-month tables.
A worked example for a wedding on Saturday, June 12, 2027:
| Step | When | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Invitations out | 8–12 weeks before | March 20 to April 17, 2027 |
| Gentle reminder | 10–14 days before the reply-by date | May 1 to 5, 2027 |
| Reply-by date | 4 weeks before | Saturday, May 15, 2027 |
| Last personal calls | The days after the reply-by date | May 16 to 22, 2027 |
| Final numbers to the caterer | About 2 weeks before | By May 29, 2027 |
Two adjustments: if a hotel releases unbooked rooms on a fixed date, put the reply-by date a week or two before it; for a destination wedding, set it about six weeks before, with invitations out 3–4 months ahead.
Write the date in full, so no one misreads 05/06: "Kindly reply by the fifteenth of May" or "Please reply by May 15, 2027". More lines in every tone are in wedding invitation wording.
Named guests, plus-ones and households
Decide who each invitation is for before you send it: the reply form can only enforce what you've decided. How you share the invitation settles how plus-ones work.
An open link vs personal links
| One open link | Personal links | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's shared | The same link for everyone | One link per guest or household |
| Greeting | General | By name ("Dear Clara and Tom") |
| Plus-ones | Guests say how many are coming | You set how many places each guest has |
| Who hasn't replied | You can only compare against your own list | Shown for you, name by name |
| Best for | Small weddings, close circles, open evening parties | Most weddings over a few dozen guests, and any wedding with set numbers |
An open link is simpler, with a maximum party size per reply (on Veiloria, from 1 to 10 people). Personal links greet each guest by name and offer only the places you've given them.
Places per guest: +1, +2, +3
With personal links, each invitation carries a number of extra places. A sensible default:
- +0 for a single guest whose place is just for them
- +1 for couples, and for single guests you'd like to bring someone
- +2 or +3 for families with children
On Veiloria, this is the guest list manager: add guests one per line with +1, +2 or +3, send each personal link by WhatsApp, and see who hasn't replied. It holds up to 1,000 guests, is included with Premium and Bespoke, and is $65 on Essential (or the equivalent in your currency).
When a guest asks for a place you haven't given, keep it short:
We'd love to have you there. We're keeping numbers small, so we can only invite the guests named on the invitation. We hope you understand.
For every plus-one situation, from new partners to children, see our guide to plus-ones on wedding invitations.
Getting every reply in
Most guests reply on their own; a few never do without a nudge. Greenvelope's 2026 benchmark of 70,624 events found that the median wedding heard back from 88.9% of its guest list, and that 80.9% of wedding replies were yes. It is first-party data from one invitation service, so treat it as a guide; on a list of 150, it means around 17 guests to chase.
Reminders
Send one gentle reminder 10–14 days before the reply-by date to the guests who haven't answered. Carry the link and the date again, and nothing that sounds like a reproach.
Gentle, by message:
Hi Clara! Just a little note that we'd love your reply to our wedding invitation by Saturday, May 15. Here's the link again: [link] 💌 Margaux & Henri
Warm, for family:
Hello Auntie Rose, we're doing the seating plan and would love to know if you and Uncle Jim can join us on June 12. Reply here: [link]. Love, Margaux and Henri
You'll find 25 messages, for WhatsApp, text, email and the final calls, in RSVP reminder messages.
The last few calls
After the reply-by date, call: a phone call is harder to ignore than a message and kinder than another reminder. Split the list so each of you, your parents and the wedding party call the guests they know best.
A script that works:
- "We're giving the caterer our numbers this week, and we didn't want to miss you."
- "Can you join us on the twelfth?"
- If yes: "Wonderful. Could you reply on the link tonight, so we have everyone's names and dietary needs?"
- If unsure: "Could you let us know by Friday? After that we'll have to tell the caterer it's a no."
If you still hear nothing after a call and a final message, count the guest as not attending and tell them so kindly. This step also finds the invitations that never arrived (an old email, a changed number): resend those at once.
Replying to someone else's wedding? Here is how to respond to a wedding invitation.
Using the replies: caterer, seating, playlist
Three lists come out of a good RSVP:
- For the caterer: every guest with a dietary requirement, by name, with the requirement in their words. Send it with the final headcount and ask the caterer to confirm each line.
- For the seating plan: a family of four that replied together is one block of four seats.
- For the band or DJ: the song requests, plus your own do-not-play list.
On Veiloria, the replies page sorts these for you: dietary notes for the caterer, song requests under "On the dance floor", and guests' messages under "Notes for you".
Exporting to a spreadsheet
Export your replies to a CSV file, then open it in Google Sheets, Excel or Numbers. In Google Sheets:
- Import: File, Import, Upload, and choose the CSV.
- Filter: Data, Create a filter, then filter the attendance column to show only acceptances.
- Count people, not replies: if one column holds the answer and another the number in the party, use
=SUMIF(C:C, "Attending", D:D), changing the letters and the word to match your file. If each person already has their own row,=COUNTIF(C:C, "Attending")is enough. - Pull the dietary list: filter the dietary column to "is not empty" and copy the rows into a new tab for the caterer.
- Add your columns: table number, thank-you sent.
Export again after late replies arrive rather than editing your copy by hand.
RSVP tools compared: forms, wedding websites, invitation platforms
The best website to RSVP for a wedding depends on what you want the reply to be part of: a free form, a free wedding website, a designed e-card priced by guest count, or a designed invitation with the reply inside. Here are the five ways couples collect replies, with prices as published on each company's site on October 19, 2026.
| Option | Examples | Cost (as listed, Oct 19, 2026) | What guests do | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Messages and a spreadsheet | WhatsApp, text, phone | Free | Reply in a chat | Very small weddings where you know everyone | Answers scattered across chats; no dietary list |
| Online form | Google Forms | Free | Fill in a form from a link | A free reply form you control | Separate from the invitation; "Limit to 1 response" requires a Google sign-in |
| Free wedding website | Zola, Joy | Free, with online RSVP | Visit the website and reply there | Couples who want a website, registry and RSVP in one free place | The RSVP sits on a website, apart from the invitation; Zola states it does not offer digital invitations |
| Invitation service priced by guests | Greenvelope, Paperless Post | Greenvelope: $99 per mailing for up to 100 guests, $249 for up to 250. Paperless Post: first 50 direct invitations free on its free features; paid tiers $0.50 to $1.44 per guest at 50, less on longer lists | Open an e-card by email or text, then reply | Designed e-cards with reminders and tracking | Cost grows with the list; a Save the Date is a separate send |
| Designed invitation, RSVP inside | Veiloria, The Digital Yes | One payment per wedding, not per guest. Veiloria from $199, unlimited guests; The Digital Yes from €175 | Open the invitation and reply in it | Couples who want the invitation itself to be the occasion | Made by a designer, so it takes days rather than minutes |
Where each is strong. Joy and Zola are hard to beat on price and pair the RSVP with a registry. Greenvelope publishes its prices in full. Paperless Post has designer collections and lets you send your first 50 invitations directly for free on its free tier.
Where a designed invitation differs. The reply is the invitation's last page, not a separate stop, and the price doesn't rise with your list. For a full comparison, read the best digital wedding invitation sites. For what sets the high end apart, see luxury digital wedding invitations.
At Veiloria, the RSVP, unlimited guests and unlimited sends come with every plan, with one payment per wedding and no per-guest fees. Compare the plans in detail:

Privacy: who sees your guests' answers
Only the two of you should see your guests' answers. Dietary notes can reveal health or religion, so ask these questions of any RSVP tool:
- Who can read the replies? Only the couple, ideally behind their own sign-in.
- Can guests see who else is coming? For most weddings, they shouldn't.
- Is the page private? A public wedding website may turn up in search results; check whether it can be hidden or password-protected (Zola, for example, offers password protection).
- How long are replies kept, and can you export and delete them?
On Veiloria, replies arrive in your private portal, which you sign into with your order code and email, and couples' invitations are kept out of search engines. Your invitation stays online for at least 12 months after the wedding. Our privacy policy sets out how guests' replies are handled.
Your RSVP set-up checklist
Copy this before you send:
- Reply-by date set, about 4 weeks before the day, and written in full
- Final-numbers date confirmed with the caterer and venue
- Essentials on: attendance, each guest's name, dietary requirements
- Extras chosen: children, song, note, events, shuttle (only those you'll use)
- Open link or personal links decided; places (+0 to +3) set per guest
- Tested on your own phone: sent a test reply, then changed it
- QR code printed for the guests who prefer paper
- Reminder date in your calendar, 10–14 days before the reply-by date
- Call list split between the two of you, family and the wedding party
- Export date set for the caterer, seating plan and playlist
Let the reply feel like the rest of the invitation. In Zellige a yes pours a glass of mint tea, in Conte the reply folds into a paper bird and flies away, and in Calligraphe each guest signs their reply in the ink they choose:

Frequently asked questions
What does RSVP mean on a wedding invitation?
RSVP means répondez s'il vous plaît, French for "please reply". It asks each guest to say whether they will attend by a set date, so the couple can plan food, seats and numbers.
How do you do an online RSVP for a wedding?
Choose a tool with a built-in reply form, decide what to ask (attendance, each guest's name, dietary needs), set a reply-by date about four weeks before the wedding, and share the link. Then remind anyone missing 10–14 days before the deadline, and call after it.
What is the best website to RSVP for a wedding?
The best one is the one where guests reply without signing up, and where the reply sits inside the invitation they already opened. Free wedding websites such as Joy and Zola suit couples who also want a registry, services such as Greenvelope charge by guest count, and designed invitations like Veiloria include the RSVP in one payment per wedding.
Is there a free RSVP website for weddings?
Yes. Joy and Zola both offer free wedding websites with online RSVP, and Google Forms is free for a simple reply form. The trade-off is that the reply lives apart from your invitation, so guests follow a second link to answer.
Do guests need an account to RSVP online?
They shouldn't, and with a well-made invitation they don't: guests open the link in their browser and reply. Some tools do ask for a sign-in, such as a Google Form set to "Limit to 1 response", so check before you send.
When should the RSVP deadline be for a wedding?
Set the RSVP deadline about four weeks before the wedding. That leaves time to chase late replies and still give your caterer final numbers two weeks before the day. For a destination wedding or a hotel room block, set it earlier.
Can guests change their RSVP after replying?
With most online RSVPs, yes: guests open the same link and change their answer. On Veiloria, a reply can be changed from the same link, and replies stay open after the reply-by date too. Ask guests to tell you directly about changes in the final two weeks.
What do you do about guests who don't RSVP?
Send one gentle reminder with the link before the deadline, then call the guests still missing in the days after it. If there is still no answer after a call and a final message, count them as not attending and tell them so kindly. A missing reply is sometimes an invitation that never arrived, so check their contact details too.
