Evening wedding invitations are for guests who join the party after the ceremony and meal: the cake, the first dance and the dancing. Send them on the same day as the day invitations, in the same design, with their own arrival time, end time and a word on food.

Below: eight countries' customs, 20 wording examples and the timing. For collecting replies, see digital wedding invitations with RSVP.

Day guests vs evening guests: what each invitation covers

A day guest is invited to the whole wedding; an evening guest is invited to the party after the meal, usually from about 7 or 8 p.m.

A reception-only invitation usually follows a private ceremony or a wedding abroad. For wording beyond guest groups, see our wedding invitation wording examples.

Why couples invite guests in groups

Couples split their list into day guests and evening guests when the people they love outnumber the seats at dinner.

Venue size

Chapels, registry offices and dining rooms often seat fewer people than the party space holds once the tables are cleared.

Budget

Caterers price the seated meal per head; evening guests share a buffet or late-night food, which costs less per person.

Tradition

In the Netherlands, France and Italy, two circles are the custom rather than a compromise. For welcome dinners and brunches, see wedding weekend invitations.

Day and evening guests around the world

Many wedding cultures invite in two circles; what changes is where the line falls and what each invitation is called.

UK: day and evening guests

Day guests share the ceremony, the wedding breakfast (the meal, whatever the hour) and speeches; evening guests arrive for the cake and first dance. Their card invites them to the "evening reception", and the buffet that follows is their meal.

Netherlands: daggasten and avondgasten

Daggasten share the ceremony and dinner; avondgasten join for the feest afterwards. The usual answer is one trouwkaart in two versions: the same design, different times.

France: faire-part, vin d'honneur and repas

The faire-part announces the marriage; cards slipped inside invite some guests to the vin d'honneur (drinks after the ceremony) and a closer circle to the repas, with a carton réponse for replies.

Italy: partecipazione and invito al ricevimento

The partecipazione announces the wedding; guests also invited to the reception find a small invito al ricevimento inside.

Germany: Standesamt, ceremony and Feier

Only the civil ceremony at the Standesamt makes a German marriage legal, and it is often small; the church or freie Trauung (celebrant-led) and the Feier bring everyone together.

Gulf: men's and women's celebrations

In Saudi Arabia and much of the Gulf, men's and women's celebrations are often separate, each with its own card, usually issued by the families. Customs vary; see Arabic wedding invitations.

Making evening guests feel just as welcome

Evening guests feel welcome when their invitation matches, arrives the same day and leads to something worth arriving for.

  1. Same design, same day: "two parts of one wedding", not "two classes of guest".
  2. Time it to a moment: arrival just before the cake or first dance.
  3. Say whether there's food, and when.
  4. Give the end time and the way home.
  5. Decide plus-ones by group; our plus-one wedding etiquette guide shows how.
  6. Never apologize in print. "Due to limited numbers" belongs nowhere on an invitation.

Digital evening wedding invitations: one design, two versions

Send two matching invitations, one per group, each with its own link and times. One link with a line for "evening guests" tells everyone about the tiers. Never share either in a chat that mixes both groups.

On Veiloria, a matching second invitation (listed as an invitation for another event) is $55 on every plan, or the equivalent in your currency: the same design, with the evening's own time and details. With the guest list manager (included with Premium and Bespoke, $65 on Essential), each guest gets a personal link that greets them by name. See plans and pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How do you word an evening wedding invitation?

Name the hosts, invite guests to the "evening reception" or "evening celebration", and give the date, times, venue and whether there's food. Leave out any reason; examples 1 to 8 are ready to copy.

Is it rude to invite people to the evening only?

No, it's normal in the UK, the Netherlands and many other countries. It only feels rude when the evening invitation looks different, arrives later or apologizes.

Do evening guests get a save the date?

They can, and they should if they'll travel or the date falls in a busy season. Send it with the day guests' save the dates, 6 to 12 months ahead.

When do you send evening wedding invitations?

On the same day as the day invitations, 8 to 12 weeks before the wedding (3 to 4 months for a destination). Give them the same reply-by date, about four weeks before.

Should evening guests bring a gift?

A card is always welcome; many evening guests also bring a gift, often a smaller one than a day guest's, but it's never required. Share any registry with both groups in the same words.

How do you invite some guests to the ceremony only?

Send a separate invitation that names the ceremony and says what follows for those guests, such as drinks or cake (examples 12 to 14). Outside Italy and France, guests may expect the meal, so give them something to stay for.
