To respond to a wedding invitation, reply by the date it gives, in the way it asks: tap the RSVP in a digital invitation, post back the reply card, or write a short note when there's neither. Name everyone who is coming, add any dietary needs, and send a warm line whether you accept or decline.

Below: what each invitation asks for, the online RSVP step by step, 20 accept and decline examples, who is invited, changing your reply and links that won't open. The examples use our demo couple, Valeria and Tomás, who marry in Costa Rica on Saturday, February 19, 2028. Couples will find their side in our guide to digital wedding invitations with RSVP.

How to respond to a wedding invitation: the short answer

Reply in the channel the invitation names, before its reply-by date, for exactly the people it names.

The invitation asks forHow to reply
An RSVP button or linkReply inside the invitation: yes or no, each guest's full name, dietary needs
A printed reply cardFill it in and post it back; the envelope is usually stamped and addressed
"Regrets only"Reply only if you can't come
Nothing (a formal invitation)A handwritten note in the third person

Reply as soon as you know, ideally within a week or two: your answer becomes the caterer's count, so an early "no" helps more than a late "yes".

What happens when you open a digital invitation

A digital wedding invitation is a private web page sent as a link: it opens in your phone's browser, holds the day's details and collects your reply, with no app or account. Our guide to digital wedding invitations explains how couples make them.

The opening

Many designs begin with a gesture: tap a wax seal, lift a veil, pull a curtain. Any music starts after your first tap.

The details

Before replying, read who is invited, whether children are included and the reply-by date.

The reply

The RSVP usually comes last: accept or decline, then each person's name and dietary needs.

In Selva, our demo couple's invitation, a blue morpho leads you down the page, landing beside each section, all the way to the reply:

How to RSVP to a wedding online, step by step

  1. Open the link from the message or email, or scan the QR code on a printed card.
  2. Read the essentials: date, venues, dress code, reply-by date.
  3. Check who is invited: your name alone, "and Guest", a family name or a number of places.
  4. Choose accept or decline.
  5. Enter every guest's full name, spelled as you'd want it on a place card.
  6. Add dietary needs per person, allergies apart from preferences.
  7. Send, and wait for the confirmation. Screenshot it if you're unsure it went through.

Accepting: 10 wedding RSVP reply examples

Accept in the RSVP first, then add a personal word: the RSVP is the count, your message is the warmth.

By text

  1. Close friend: "Valeria!! We're in. Just RSVP'd for both of us, can't wait to see you two in the cloud forest 🦋"
  2. Family: "Jorge and I will be there, of course. Reply sent in the invitation. So happy for you both."
  3. Colleague: "Thank you for including me, Tomás. I've accepted in the invitation and I'm looking forward to it."
  4. Yes, with a question: "Accepted for me and Ana. Is there a shuttle back from the venue, or should we book a car?"

More are in our wedding invitation text messages.

By card or note

  1. A reply card, filled in (the printed "M" begins your title: finish it as Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Mx.):

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Rojas
[x] Joyfully accepts [ ] Regretfully declines
Number attending: 2

  1. A formal note, for a formal invitation with no card; it mirrors the invitation and names the hosts:

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Rojas
accept with pleasure
the kind invitation of
Mr. and Mrs. Alberto Méndez
for Saturday, the nineteenth of February

  1. A handwritten note: "Dear Valeria and Tomás, we'd be honored to be there on February 19. Thank you for including us. With love, Carmen and Luis"

In the RSVP note

  1. "So proud of you both. See you in San Gerardo de Dota."
  2. "Thank you for the plus-one: I'll be bringing my partner, Sam Okoye."
  3. "Already practicing for the dance floor. Song request is in."

How to decline a wedding invitation: 10 examples

Decline before the reply-by date with a short regret and your good wishes; you don't owe a reason. Decline in the RSVP too, so the count is right.

  1. Close friend: "I'm so sorry, I can't make it on the 19th. Dinner on us when you're back?"
  2. Family: "Tomás, we're heartbroken to miss it. We'll be with you in spirit, and we want every photo."
  3. Colleague: "Thank you for the invitation. Unfortunately I can't attend, but I wish you both a wonderful day."
  4. Formal note:

Ms. Helen Park
regretfully declines
the kind invitation of
Mr. and Mrs. Alberto Méndez
for Saturday, the nineteenth of February

  1. Can't travel: "Costa Rica sounds wonderful, but we can't make the trip this time. We'll raise a glass to you on the 19th."
  2. A date clash: "We already have a family wedding that weekend, so we'll have to miss yours. Congratulations to you both."
  3. A baby due: "With the baby due in February, we can't travel, but we'll be cheering from home."
  4. In the RSVP note: "So sorry we can't be there. Thank you for thinking of us."
  5. By email, no reason given: "Dear Valeria and Tomás, thank you for your invitation. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend; warmest wishes to you both."
  6. Half the household: "Ana will be there; I can't make it, unfortunately. Wishing you both the very best."

Plus-ones, children and dietary needs: what to say

Reply for the people the invitation names; if a name or a place isn't there, it isn't included.

The invitation saysWho is invited
"Ana Ruiz"Ana alone
"Ana Ruiz and Guest"Ana and one guest she chooses
"Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Rojas"The couple, not their children
"The Rojas Family"The whole household, children included
A personal link with places (+1, +2)Up to that many people

If it's unclear, ask once, privately: "Is it for me alone, or is there room for a partner? Either is fine." Our guide to plus-ones on wedding invitations explains how couples decide.

For diets, be specific per person: "Sam: severe tree-nut allergy" helps the caterer; "nuts" doesn't.

Changing your reply: can I change my RSVP?

Yes: tell the couple as early as you can, and change a yes to a no only for a real reason.

ChangeHow
Yes to noUpdate the RSVP at once and message the couple yourself
No to yesAsk first, before the reply-by date: your place may be gone
A new dietary needUpdate the reply and mention it

On a Veiloria invitation, you change your answer from the same link, with no account. Once final numbers are with the caterer, a late cancellation may still cost the couple, so in the last week, call: "I'm so sorry, I'm ill and won't make it on Saturday. I've updated the RSVP, but wanted you to hear it from me."

Open it in your phone's own browser; most problems come from the app you tapped it in.

ProblemTry this
Nothing happens inside Instagram or FacebookUse the app's menu to open the link in your browser
It asks for an app, a password or card detailsStop: an invitation never needs them. Check with the couple that they sent it; it may be a scam
Still stuckMessage the couple your names and answer; they can add it

Don't forward a personal link that greets you by name: it may hold your places. Helping a grandparent reply? See digital wedding invitations for older guests.

Frequently asked questions

How do you respond to a wedding invitation by text?

Reply in the invitation's RSVP first, then text the couple a warm line, since a text alone can get lost: "We'd love to come. Just replied for both of us in the invitation." If they asked for text replies, give full names and a clear yes or no.

How do you decline a wedding invitation politely?

Reply before the reply-by date with a short regret and good wishes, without a long explanation: "I'm so sorry I can't be there; wishing you both a beautiful day." Decline in the RSVP too, and add a call for someone close.

Can you change your RSVP after you reply?

Yes. Most online invitations let you change it from the same link; tell the couple directly too, as early as you can. Turning a no into a yes needs their agreement first.

Should you bring a plus-one if the invitation doesn't say so?

No. If the invitation names only you, it's for you alone; "and Guest", a second name or an extra place makes a plus-one. If you're unsure, ask once, privately, and accept the answer.

How soon should you RSVP to a wedding?

As soon as you know, ideally within a week or two, and always by the reply-by date. If you can't decide yet, tell the couple when you'll know.

Do you need to send a gift if you decline?

No, but it's a kind gesture from close friends and family; a card with good wishes is always right. For friends just engaged, a Veiloria gift card toward their own invitation is a gift they'll open first.
