Good wedding change of date wording says three things in three short sentences: what changed, the new detail (or that it will follow), and what guests should do now. Call immediate family and the wedding party first, update the invitation on the link guests already have, then send every household the same short notice.
Below are 24 messages, four per situation. For the original invitation, see our wedding invitation wording guide.
Wedding change of date wording: the short answer
A change-of-date announcement is a short notice to every invited household that replaces one detail of the invitation and tells guests what to do next. No reason is owed.
The formula: "Our wedding has moved to Saturday, September 18, 2027. The venue and everything else stay the same. Please confirm again on the invitation by July 31."
| Situation | The notice must say | Ask guests to reply again? |
|---|---|---|
| New date | The new date in full; what stays the same | Yes, everyone |
| Postponed | Postponed, not canceled; when they'll hear next | Once there's a date |
| New venue or city | The venue's name and address | Only if the city changes |
| New time | Old and new time side by side | No |
| Smaller celebration | Who it's for now; any later party | Yes, remaining guests |
| Canceled | It won't take place; what happens to gifts | No |
Who to tell first, and in what order
Tell people in order of what the change costs them, by voice before writing, all within about 48 hours.
- Lock the change in writing with your venue and officiant.
- Parents, and anyone hosting or paying: call or visit.
- Grandparents and close family: by phone, never in a group chat.
- The wedding party, who may have booked outfits and flights.
- Guests with travel booked, and the hotel holding your room block.
- Update the invitation, so the link shows the new detail.
- Every other household: one personal message each, the same day.
- Social media last, if at all.

Marta, I wanted you to hear it from me: the wedding is off. I'm okay, and I'll call you this week.
Updating a digital invitation without confusing anyone
Update the link guests already have, then message them: an edited page alone is not an announcement.

The mended bowl
Kintsugi
Stoneware mended in gold, a quiet tea room
Two halves of a stoneware tea bowl rest apart on handmade paper. Your guests draw them together and molten gold runs down the crack, mending the bowl, before a quiet tea room appears around it, your names on the wall and a branch of the season in the alcove. The whole invitation is made of pieces joined in gold as they scroll: a date written in wet lacquer that they dust with gold, notes that mend once read, and their reply mends the very last crack.
Same link, new details
Keep the link, and check everything that carries the old detail: countdown, program, reply-by date, map, add-to-calendar and hotel deadlines.
On a Veiloria invitation, times, addresses and wording are updated free until the wedding, on the same link (see the FAQ). Once it's live, any change, a new date included, goes to your designer for approval in your portal, as how it works describes.
Telling guests what changed
- Update first, message second, so the link already shows the change.
- Name the change in the first line, and add a note inside: "Updated March 2: new date."
- Ask guests to replace calendar entries: one saved from the old invitation doesn't update itself.
- Export your replies, then ask everyone to confirm again. Guests can change their answer on the same link.
- Follow up with the silent using our RSVP reminder messages.
Save the dates already sent: what now?
With only save the dates out, send a change-the-date notice now and the invitation 8–12 weeks before the new date.
| Already sent | What to do |
|---|---|
| Nothing yet | Tell family; the invitation carries the new details |
| Save the dates only | Change-the-date notice now, invitation later |
| Invitations, no replies | Update the invitation, message every household |
| Invitations with replies | Update, message, ask everyone to confirm again |
| Under two weeks to go | Phone calls first, then a message to all |

Frequently asked questions
How do you announce a wedding postponement?
Call family and the wedding party first, then send every household a short notice: postponed, not canceled, when the new date will follow, and whether to change bookings.
How do you tell guests the wedding date has changed?
Update the invitation first, then message each household with the new date in full, what stays the same and a request to confirm again. Ask guests to replace any saved calendar entry.
Do you need to send new invitations if the date changes?
Not if it's digital: update it and message guests. Paper invitations already mailed need a change-the-date card; reprint only if most details changed.
How much notice should you give for a wedding change?
Announce within a day or two of confirming with your venue. Guests need a new date at least 8–12 weeks ahead, as with an invitation; changes in the final two weeks call for phone calls.
How do you word a wedding cancellation?
"We're sorry to share that our wedding on June 12 will not take place," with a thank-you and a line saying gifts will be returned. You owe no reason.
