Seasonal wedding invitations take their palette, imagery and timing from the time of year: blossom and daylight in spring, sea blues in summer, harvest gold in fall, candlelight and frost in winter. Send save the dates 6–12 months ahead (9–12 for peak-season and holiday dates) and invitations 8–12 weeks before the wedding.

Below: palettes by season, 31 of our 43 wedding invitation designs sorted by season, the 2027 holiday dates, the southern hemisphere, and send dates for six example weddings. For what makes any invitation refined, see our guide to luxury digital wedding invitations.

How to choose seasonal wedding invitations: season first, then setting

Choose the palette from the season, then the scene from your venue: a vineyard in October and a vineyard in June ask for different invitations.

SeasonPaletteImageryAdd to the invitation
SpringBlush, pistachio, citrus, cobaltBlossom, glasshouses, pâtisserieRain plan, lawn-friendly shoes
SummerSea blue, coral, lavender, Falu redCoast, postcards, meadowsShade, start time, heat
FallBordeaux, harvest gold, umberVines, libraries, candlelightLayers for the evening
WinterNight blue, crimson, black and goldSnow, velvet, midnightTravel and weather backup

The seasons here are meteorological: in the northern hemisphere, spring is March to May, summer June to August, fall September to November and winter December to February (NOAA, 2016).

On Premium, a design is redrawn in your colors with your venue painted by hand on the cover, so a spring design can follow your flowers. More palettes are in wedding invitation colors, and every theme in digital wedding invitation ideas.

Spring wedding invitations (8 designs)

Spring wedding invitations suit daylight palettes and openings drawn from gardens: glass, flowers, porcelain and sugar. To choose the flowers themselves, by season and by what each one means, see our guide to floral wedding invitations.

Orangerie

In Orangerie, guests wipe the fog from a Victorian glasshouse "just after the rain". Best for: a conservatory or botanical garden in April.

Herbier

Herbier opens a strapped flower press; every section is another sheet of pressed flowers. Best for: a May garden party.

Toile

In Toile, a screen folds back on a rose-toile salon where the swing swings and the fountain plays. Best for: a château garden.

Porcelaine

Porcelaine turns blank tiles into a blue-and-white garden; a teapot pours when a guest accepts. Best for: a garden lunch in cobalt and white.

Éventail

In Éventail, a painted silk fan opens and orange blossom falls, the scent of Seville in spring. Best for: an Andalusian patio.

Sucre

Sucre is a Paris pâtisserie in pistachio and rose; guests reply by cutting a slice of your cake. Best for: a spring brunch or daytime city wedding.

Ruban

In Ruban, guests pull a French-blue silk bow undone and a card rises among blue forget-me-nots. Best for: a fresh spring morning, and the bride's something blue.

Dentelle

Dentelle undoes the pearl buttons of a lace gown onto silk, peonies and pearls. Best for: a church wedding in peony season, in May or June.

When to send for a spring wedding

May was the busiest wedding month in Bank of America's 2025 data, so give a May date save the dates 9–12 months ahead. For a March wedding, send invitations in the first days of January, after the holidays.

Summer wedding invitations (10 designs)

Summer wedding invitations work best in sea blues and sun-washed colors, with an opening that feels like the start of a holiday.

Carte Postale

In Carte Postale, guests turn over a postcard; a lemon stamp drops in and the postmark inks your date. Best for: a Riviera wedding that doubles as guests' summer trip.

Nacre

Nacre sinks guests through sunlit water to an oyster whose pearl becomes the "&" between your names. Best for: an island or sunset terrace.

Cyanotype

Cyanotype is a sun print: guests let the sun in, and water washes the print into Prussian blue around your names. Best for: a cool palette for a hot seaside day.

Lavande

Lavande throws blue shutters open on a July morning in Provence. Best for: a farmhouse lunch in high summer.

Solstice

In Solstice, guests turn a maypole in a Swedish meadow, gather wildflowers section by section and wear the crown to say yes. Best for: a wedding near the June solstice.

Selva

Selva follows a blue morpho through a Costa Rican cloud forest. Best for: an eco-lodge wedding in the dry months.

Hacienda

In Hacienda, papel picado and string lights unroll over a town square at dusk. Best for: a long evening with a fiesta reception.

Roseraie

In Roseraie, an embossed envelope sealed in old-rose wax opens into a rose garden at golden hour. Best for: a garden wedding in June, when the old roses are at their peak.

Portail

Portail swings open garden gates woven with white roses, jasmine and ivy onto a candlelit aisle at blue hour. Best for: a summer ceremony that starts as the light goes.

Ciel

In Ciel, guests rise through the clouds into a golden-hour sky that turns to starlight as they scroll. Best for: a long summer evening outdoors.

When to send for a summer wedding

Summer dates compete with guests' own vacations: send save the dates 9–12 months ahead and invitations at the 12-week end. For coastal weddings abroad, like those in our destination wedding in Italy guide, lean to 12 months.

Fall wedding invitations (7 designs)

Fall (or autumn) wedding invitations suit harvest colors and candlelight, because dusk now arrives during dinner.

Vendange

Vendange is the last week of harvest: guests open a wine crate of bottles labelled with your names. Best for: a vineyard in September or October.

Bulles

In Bulles, guests pop the cork in a Champagne house cut into the chalk. Best for: a fall wedding that opens with a toast.

Chapitre

Chapitre opens a green morocco book in a library after dark; guests reply by filing a library card. Best for: a country house as the evenings draw in.

Clair-Obscur

In Clair-Obscur, a peony blooms by candlelight in a Dutch still life. Best for: a candlelit dinner from October into December.

Lanternes

Lanternes sends paper lanterns up over a lake at dusk. Best for: a September lakeside wedding with an evening reception.

Calligraphe

In Calligraphe, a pen writes your names live in iron-gall ink and gold. Best for: an intimate wedding; it is the most seasonless design here.

Billet Doux

Billet Doux unfolds a parchment love letter onto low golden light and apricot roses. Best for: an early-fall wedding in warm, late-afternoon light.

When to send for a fall wedding

October and September follow May as the busiest months, so give save the dates 9–12 months: for October 16, 2027, that means October 2026 to January 2027. Invitations land in July or August, when many guests are away: remind them a week before the reply-by date.

Winter wedding invitations (6 designs)

Winter wedding invitations suit dark palettes, velvet and candlelight, with an opening that feels like coming in from the cold.

Givre

Givre has guests snip along pencilled lines until a paper snowflake falls open on a chalet in the pines. Best for: an Alpine wedding, or any date from December to February.

Kintsugi

In Kintsugi, guests join two halves of a tea bowl and gold runs down the crack. Its live demo is set in January. Best for: a small, quiet winter wedding.

Velours

Velours lifts a crimson curtain in an opera house. Best for: a December evening; crimson and gilt read as Christmas without a single holly leaf.

Écrin

Écrin opens a velvet ring box that becomes a music box. Best for: a black-tie winter dinner.

Minuit, for New Year's Eve

In Minuit, guests ride a black-and-gold elevator to a rooftop at midnight. Our demo couple Simone and Kenji marry in Manhattan on New Year's Eve: open their demo. Best for: a New Year's Eve wedding.

Soirée

In Soirée, a black pochette opens in a spiral of gold foil onto white orchids and calla lilies. Best for: a black-tie winter evening in black and gold.

When to send for a winter wedding

Winter collides with the holidays: send save the dates 10–12 months ahead. For January or February, send invitations before Thanksgiving or in early December, and set a January wedding's reply-by date in mid-December.

For a holiday wedding, send save the dates 12 months ahead and check every faith calendar on your guest list, not just your own.

New Year's EveFri, December 31Competing parties: tell guests a year ahead

Faith calendars move every year. Jewish weddings are not held on Shabbat or major festivals, and many communities avoid the Omer between Passover and Shavuot. Weddings rarely take place during Ramadan. Hindu families often set an auspicious date (muhurat) with a priest. Ask before you fix the date.

For Christmas wedding invitations, let the palette speak: Velours, Écrin or Clair-Obscur. For a New Year's Eve wedding invitation, Minuit, Bulles or Soirée. Two lines to adapt:

Formal, for Christmas:

Margaux and Henri invite you to spend the last Saturday before Christmas with them: December 18, 2027, at six in the evening.

Modern, for New Year's Eve:

Simone and Kenji invite you to see in 2028 with them, married. Friday, December 31, 2027. Black tie.

Southern hemisphere and tropical weddings

South of the equator the seasons are reversed but begin on the same dates (NOAA), so a December wedding in Sydney or Cape Town is a summer wedding.

  1. Choose by month. A southern June takes winter designs (Givre, Velours); a southern December takes summer ones (Carte Postale, Nacre).
  2. Christmas falls in summer. A southern Christmas wedding wants sea blues, not frost.
  3. In the tropics, plan by rainfall. Many venues have a wet and a dry season instead of four: ask which months are dry.
  4. Tell northern guests what to pack. Put the expected weather beside the dress code.

Guests flying in need more notice: see destination wedding invitations.

When to send invitations for every season

Send save the dates 6–12 months ahead (9–12 for peak and holiday dates) and invitations 8–12 weeks before, with replies due about four weeks before.

Frequently asked questions

When should you send invitations for a summer wedding?

Send invitations for a summer wedding 8–12 weeks before, at the 12-week end because summer is peak season. For June 19, 2027, that means March 27 to April 24, with replies due May 22.

What colors suit a winter wedding invitation?

Dark, warm palettes suit winter best: night blue with candlelight gold, crimson and gilt, black and gold, or velvet with rose gold. Use frost white as an accent, and keep the text in strong contrast.

Can I send digital invitations for a holiday wedding?

Yes: they arrive instantly, with no holiday postal delays. Avoid Thanksgiving week and the days between Christmas and New Year, when messages get lost among family plans. Send a save the date 12 months ahead.

What invitation suits a beach wedding?

A light invitation in sea blues, with an opening that feels like a holiday rather than a nautical cliché: a postcard (Carte Postale), a pearl (Nacre) or a sun print (Cyanotype). Add what guests need on sand: shoes, sunset time and a backup plan for wind.

When should you send save the dates for a December wedding?

Send them 10–12 months ahead, between December and February of the year before. December weddings compete with holiday travel, so flights fill early. The invitation follows in late September or October.
