Good cash gift wording for a wedding invitation is one gracious sentence that thanks guests for coming first and names the fund second, placed in a gifts section, an insert or on your website, never in the main invitation text. For example: "Your presence is the gift. If you'd like to give more, a contribution to our honeymoon would mean so much."

Below: where it goes, 30 lines to copy and eight countries' customs. For every other line, see our wedding invitation wording guide.

The short answer: where gift wording goes

Gift wording belongs wherever guests look for practical details, never in the lines that say who, when and where.

WhereGift wording?What goes there
Main invitation textNoNames, date, place, reply-by date
Save the dateNoThe date, the place, "formal invitation to follow"
Gifts section of a digital invitationYesOne line, plus the link, account or registry
Insert card in a paper suiteYesThe same line on its own small card
Wedding websiteYesRegistry, fund links, any explanation

The Emily Post Institute is strictest: no mention of gifts on the invitation at all, not even "no gifts, please"; word of mouth carries the message instead. A digital invitation's gifts section is, like a website, a page guests open by choice. On a Veiloria invitation, gifts sit with travel and stay in a section of their own, away from the cover. The rest is in our checklist of what to include in a wedding invitation.

Is it rude to ask for money on a wedding invitation?

No: asking for money is polite when it's offered as an option, in one sentence, outside the main invitation. It's also common. In The Knot Worldwide's 2026 Annual Registry Study of 1,759 US couples, 75% included a cash fund on their registry and 41% said cash was the gift they wanted most.

  1. Presence first. Thanks for coming makes the gift optional.
  2. One sentence. A paragraph sounds like a pitch.
  3. Say what it's for. A trip or a home, not "cash".
  4. Never name an amount. No minimum, no suggestion.
  5. Say it once. Not again in reminders.

Honeymoon fund wording (6 examples)

Name the trip, not the money: a gift that becomes a long lunch or a train ride is easier to give. The same study found couples spend 31% of gifted cash on the honeymoon.

1. Formal

Your presence is the greatest gift. Should you wish to honor us further, a contribution to our honeymoon fund would be warmly appreciated.

2. Warm

Having you with us is all we wish for. If you'd like to give something, we're saving for our honeymoon in Sicily.

3. Specific

We're spending our first two weeks married on a slow train along the coast of Portugal. Our honeymoon fund is below.

4. Modern

Your company is the gift. If you'd like to add to it, our honeymoon fund is open: lemon groves, long lunches and one very small boat.

5. Playful

We already own a toaster. What we don't own is a plane ticket to Japan. Our honeymoon fund is here if you'd like to help.

6. For a destination wedding

You're traveling all this way to be with us, and that is more than enough. If you'd still like to give something, our fund is below.

Guests at a destination wedding already pay for flights, so keep the fund a footnote. In Vendange, a crate of bottles bearing their names, our demo couple Élise and Mathis open with "Your company at our table is the finest gift," then name a first case of their wedding vintage and a trip to the Douro.

The wine crate

Vendange

Knife-laid oil, a crate of bottles bearing your names

The last week of harvest at a family domaine, painted in thick oil. Guests slide the lid off a wine crate to find three bottles labelled with your names and your vintage, then rise over the vines to a long table set at golden hour. Every section that follows comes from the cellar: the countdown chalked on barrel heads, the date branded into oak, and the day a tasting flight whose glasses pour as they scroll.

Cash gift wording for wedding invitations (6 examples)

For a general cash gift, tie it to a shared goal, such as a first home, in one line.

7. Formal

Your presence is the only gift we ask for. Should you wish to give something more, a contribution toward our first home would be gratefully received.

8. Warm, for couples who already live together

We've already made a home together. If you'd like to give a gift, a contribution to what comes next would mean the world.

9. Modern, honest

Already own two of everything? So do we. If you'd like to give a gift, a contribution to our first-home savings is the one we'd treasure.

10. Card box at the reception

There will be a card box at the reception for those who'd like to leave a note or a gift.

11. Wishing well (Australia and the UK)

Your company is all we wish for. If you'd like to give a gift, a wishing well will be waiting at the reception.

12. Toward one big thing

We're saving for a piano for our first living room. Every contribution brings us one key closer.

Registry wording for a wedding invitation (5 examples)

Should the registry go on the wedding invitation? Not in the main text: one line and a link go in the gifts section, an insert or the website. In the same study, 56% of couples combined gifts with cash funds.

13. Formal

For those who have kindly asked, our registry can be found at the link below.

14. Warm

Your love and laughter are all we need. For those who'd like to give a gift, we've made a short registry.

15. Gifts and a fund together

We've registered for a few things for our home and added a fund for our honeymoon, for anyone who'd like to choose.

16. Pointing to the website

Details on gifts, travel and where to stay are on our wedding website.

17. Store registry

We're registered at [store name] under Élise Martin and Mathis Roux.

'No gifts, please' wording (5 examples)

To say no gifts on a wedding invitation, say what your guests' presence means to you and stop there.

18. Formal

Your presence is the only gift we request.

19. Warm

Having you with us is truly gift enough. Please, no gifts.

20. For guests who travel far

You're crossing an ocean to be with us. That's the gift, and we wouldn't want anything else.

21. Modern

No gifts, please. Just come hungry and ready to dance.

22. For those who'll insist anyway

We'd truly love no gifts. If you'd still like to mark the day, write us a note for our memory book.

For a "no gifts" wedding, let the invitation be the gift box: Écrin opens on a ring box that becomes a music box.

The ring box

Écrin

A ring box that becomes a music box

A midnight velvet ring box under a jeweler's light. Your guests open it: the lid springs back on its hinge, the solitaire flashes and throws one spark of colour, then the box becomes a music box. The ring sinks away, a tiny rose-gold couple rises and waltzes, and the little mirror in the lid shows them from the other side, until the camera pulls back to the jewelry case whose satin lid carries your names in rose-gold foil. Every section is a piece of jewelry on velvet: watch dials for the countdown, a wedding band to turn for the date engraved inside, a locket for your story, a charm bracelet for the day, a cameo of your venue, and two ring boxes to answer.

Donations to a charity instead (4 examples)

Name one charity, say why it matters to you, and give the link.

23. Formal

In lieu of gifts, we would be grateful for a donation to [charity name], a cause close to our hearts.

24. Personal

Élise's grandmother taught at the village school for forty years. Instead of gifts, please help fund its new library.

25. Matched

Instead of gifts, please consider a donation to [charity name]. We'll match every gift made before the wedding.

26. Half and half

Your presence is our gift. If you'd like to give something, half of our honeymoon fund will go to [charity name].

Give guests exactly what they need: the holder's name, the account or link, and a reference to write.

27. Bank transfer

For those who'd like to give a gift: Élise Martin and Mathis Roux · IBAN FR76 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 000 · Reference: your name.

28. Payment app

If you'd like to contribute, you'll find us on Venmo at @[your-handle]. Thank you for being part of our story.

29. Fund link

Our honeymoon fund is here: [link]. Leave us a note with yours, and we'll read every one on the plane.

30. QR code

Scan to contribute to our honeymoon fund (account: Élise Martin), or find the link on our website.

Print the holder's name beside any code; more in our guide to the wedding invitation QR code.

Sharing them safely

Bank details belong only on a page sent to people you invited, never on a public website or a forwardable group chat.

  • Keep account numbers on a private invitation or a password-protected page.
  • Prefer a payment link, or a Pix random key, to an ID or phone number.
  • Ask for a reference ("your names") to know whom to thank.
  • Treat any "new account details" message as a scam until confirmed by phone.
  • Take the details down a few weeks after the wedding.

A Veiloria invitation opens from one private link, nothing is shared until you approve it, and the gifts wording can be changed free until the day. More rules are in our digital wedding invitation etiquette guide.

How cash gifts are asked for around the world

Money is the expected gift in much of Europe and Latin America; only the word and the place change.

CountryLocal wordsWhere it's mentioned
Spainnúmero de cuenta, BizumA small card or the website
Mexicomesa de regalos, lluvia de sobresShort lines on the invitation
Franceurne, liste de mariageAn insert or the website
GermanyGeldgeschenkA short line, rhymed or not
ItalyIBAN, lista nozzeDebated; usually a separate card
Brazillista de presentes, PixA Pix key or Pix QR code
Portugalprenda, IBAN, MB WAYA card or the website
Netherlandscadeautip, envelopjeA line on the trouwkaart
Gulf–Kept general: presence first, or a charity

Spain: the account number and Bizum

Gifts are mostly money by transfer, so the número de cuenta goes on a small card or the website, often beside Bizum, the transfer-by-phone-number service with 31.5 million active users (bizum.es, checked 19 October 2026).

Mexico: mesa de regalos and lluvia de sobres

The mesa de regalos is a department-store registry (Liverpool, El Palacio de Hierro) shared by its event number; the lluvia de sobres, a "shower of envelopes", means guests bring cash to the reception.

France: the urne and the liste de mariage

The urne is a box at the reception for cards and checks; the liste de mariage lives online (Mille et une listes, for one) or at a department store, often funding the voyage de noces.

Germany: Geldgeschenk, with or without a rhyme

Money is a normal gift, and the hint often comes as a verse: "Töpfe, Teller, Tassen: alles da. / Ein Zuschuss für die Reise wär' wunderbar." Just as many couples want it ohne Reim: "Über einen Beitrag zu unserer Hochzeitsreise freuen wir uns sehr."

Italy: the IBAN question

Whether the IBAN belongs on the partecipazioni is Italy's liveliest etiquette debate. Classic galateo says no, so it goes on a small card or the website, with a causale (reference line) for guests' names.

Brazil and Portugal: Pix, IBAN and MB WAY

Brazilian couples use a lista de presentes (iCasei, Casar.com) paid out as money, and increasingly a Pix key or QR code; a random key (chave aleatória) keeps a CPF off the invitation. In Portugal the prenda is usually money by IBAN or MB WAY.

Netherlands: the cadeautip

Dutch invitations often end with a cadeautip, and an envelopje is the expected answer: "Cadeautip: wij zijn blij met een envelopje voor onze huwelijksreis."

Gulf weddings

Our October 2026 look at Arabic searches in Saudi Arabia and the UAE turned up no demand for gift wording, so keep any line general and modest: حضوركم يشرفنا ("your presence honors us"), or a charity.

Frequently asked questions

How do you politely ask for money on a wedding invitation?

Thank guests for coming, then name what the money is for in one sentence, in a gifts section, insert or website rather than the main text. Make it optional ("if you'd like to give a gift") and never name an amount.

Should the registry go on the wedding invitation?

Not in the main invitation text. Put one line and a link in a gifts section, an insert or on your wedding website.

How do you word a honeymoon fund on a wedding invitation?

Lead with thanks, then name the trip: "Having you with us is all we wish for. If you'd like to give something, we're saving for our honeymoon in Sicily."

How do you say no gifts on a wedding invitation?

Say what your guests' presence means and stop: "Having you with us is truly gift enough. Please, no gifts." For guests who insist, suggest a note for your memory book.

Is it OK to put bank details on a wedding invitation?

Yes, on a private invitation sent only to your guests; it's common in Spain and Portugal and debated in Italy. Keep them in the gifts section or on a separate card, never on a public page, with the holder's name and a reference.
