To say your wedding is adults-only, address the invitation only to the people invited, then add one warm line in the details, such as "We love your little ones, but our celebration is adults only." Good adults-only wedding wording lets the names, the places in the RSVP and that single line all say the same thing.
Below: where to say it, 25 lines to copy and a plan for helping parents. For every other line on the invitation, see our wedding invitation wording guide.
How to say adults only on a wedding invitation
Say it three times, quietly: in the names you address, in the number of places you reserve, and in one sentence in the details. None of the three needs the word "no".
| Where | What to write | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Envelope or personal link | Each invited adult by name | Unnamed means uninvited |
| Cover | Nothing about children | A rule on the cover reads as a scolding |
| Foot of the invitation, details or website | One warm line (examples 1–14) | Where guests look for answers |
| RSVP | The places reserved (15–18) | Answers the question before it's asked |
| Save the date | The same names as the invitation | Parents learn months ahead |
| A message or a call | A kind, firm reply (19–22) | For the few who ask anyway |
What not to write
| Avoid | Say instead |
|---|---|
| "NO CHILDREN" in capitals | "Our celebration is adults only." |
| "Adults only, no exceptions!" | Name your exceptions, or have none and say nothing more |
| "Please leave your kids at home" | "We hope you'll enjoy an evening off." |
| A long explanation of why | One reason at most: the venue, the late hour, the size |
Let the names do it
Children who aren't named on the invitation aren't invited, and the address says so before any wording does.
Address only the people invited
On paper, the envelope names the adults ("Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Okafor", or "Grace and Daniel Okafor"). "And family" or "The Okafor Family" means children are welcome, so leave it off. Children over 18 who live at home get their own invitation.
A digital invitation does it with a personal link. On Veiloria, the guest list manager gives each guest a link that greets them by name and sets how many people their reply may count (+0 to +3); the question "Will any children be attending?" can be switched off. It's included on Premium and Bespoke, and $65 on Essential (or the equivalent in your currency; see pricing). For partners, see plus-ones on wedding invitations.
Adults-only wedding wording for the invitation (8 examples)
One line at the foot of the invitation, in the same type as the rest, is enough.
1. Classic (formal)
Adult reception to follow
2. Formal
We respectfully request that this be an adults-only celebration.
3. Formal, with an age
Our celebration is for guests aged 16 and over.
4. Warm
We love your little ones, and we're giving you a night off: our wedding is adults only.
5. Warm, with a reason
So that every guest can relax and celebrate, we've chosen to keep our day adults only.
6. Honest about the venue
Our venue welcomes adults only, so we hope you'll enjoy a grown-up night out.
7. Modern
An evening for grown-ups: dinner, dancing and a toast at midnight.
8. Playful
Book the sitter. We'll keep the champagne cold.
An evening design can say "grown-ups" before a word is read. Minuit opens on a gilded elevator that guests ride to a rooftop at midnight, and the reply is going up or going down.
No kids wording for the details section (6 examples)
Parents look for the answer in the details or on the wedding website, so put the full sentence there. Head it "Children", or make it a short FAQ.
9. Short
Children: Our wedding is an adults-only celebration, and we hope you'll enjoy an evening to yourselves.
10. With the reason: space
Children: Our venue seats 90, so we've kept the guest list to adults. Thank you for understanding.
11. With the reason: the hour
Children: The ceremony begins at 7 pm and the dancing goes on past midnight, so we've planned an adults-only evening.
12. With help offered
Children: Our wedding is adults only. If a sitter near the hotel would help, ask us for the names we have.
13. For a destination weekend
Children: Our weekend on Lake Garda is for adults. We know that takes planning, so thank you.
14. As a question and answer
Can we bring our children? We adore them, but we've chosen an adults-only celebration for every family. We'd love to have you, and we understand if that makes it harder to come.
Child-free wording for the RSVP (4 examples)
The reply should show exactly who it is for, so nobody has to ask. Put these lines beside the reply or on the card.
15. Seats reserved (classic reply card)
We have reserved 2 seats in your honor.
16. Named guests (personal link)
This invitation is for Grace and Daniel Okafor.
17. A note above the reply
Kindly reply for the guests named above. Our celebration is adults only.
18. After the reply
Thank you, Grace and Daniel: two places are saved for you on December 31.
Every question worth asking, and the ones to skip, is in our list of wedding RSVP questions.
Adults-only messages to guests who ask (4 examples)
Answer quickly and the same way for everyone: a kind no, one reason, and an open door to the adults. Send these privately, never in a group chat.
19. To a friend who asks · WhatsApp
Hi Dani! Fair question. We've kept the wedding adults only for every family, so we can't make room for the girls, but we'd love to celebrate with you and Chris.
20. To a relative · Text or call
Hi Aunt Rosa, thank you for asking before you booked. We've kept the wedding adults only, our own nieces and nephews included, so it's the same for every family. We'd love to have you and Tomás with us.
21. To guests who can't come without their children · WhatsApp
We understand completely, and we'll miss you both. Can we take you to dinner when we're back from the honeymoon? 🥂
22. To guests who replied with their children · Text
Hi Marco, thank you for replying! We saw Sofia and Luca on it: we're sorry, our wedding is adults only, so your places are for you and Lucia. Could you update your reply?
More unwritten rules are in our digital wedding invitation etiquette guide.
Exceptions: babies in arms, the wedding party's children, family only (3 examples)
An exception is fair when it follows a rule you could say out loud to any guest. Decide it before you send.
| Exception | Who it covers | The risk |
|---|---|---|
| Babies in arms | Babies not yet walking, often under 12 months | Set the age, or a 14-month-old becomes a debate |
| The wedding party | Flower girls, page boys, ring bearers | Their siblings: decide in advance |
| Family only | Your own children, nieces and nephews | Close friends' children: expect questions |
23. Babies in arms
Babies in arms (under 12 months) are very welcome. Otherwise, our celebration is for adults.
24. The wedding party
Apart from the children in our wedding party, our celebration is adults only.
25. Immediate family
Our own nieces and nephews will be with us; otherwise, we've kept our wedding to adults only.
Where every generation goes to weddings, tell the elders yourselves before the invitations arrive, so they hear it from you.
Helping parents: childcare and timings
Parents can only come if they can arrange care, so tell them early and make the evening easy to plan around.
- 6–12 months ahead: address the save the date to the invited adults, and tell close family with children in person.
- 8–12 weeks ahead: send the invitation with one line from this list and a reply-by date about four weeks before the day.
- Give an end time. Sitters are booked by the hour, so "carriages at 1 am" helps.
- Share sitter options. Ask your hotel or venue which local sitting services they use, and pass the names on.
- Consider a supervised room at the hotel, budget allowing.
- Plan for nursing parents: if babies in arms are welcome, keep a quiet room near the reception.
- Give a destination wedding more notice: parents may need care for several days.
The rest of the details section is in our checklist of what to include in a wedding invitation. For an evening that looks like one, three designs open after dark: Velours' opera curtain, Clair-Obscur's candlelit peony and Écrin's ring box.

Frequently asked questions
How do you say adults only on a wedding invitation?
Address the invitation only to the invited adults and add one warm line in the details, such as "Our celebration is adults only." Keep the cover free of rules.
Is it rude to have a child-free wedding?
No: an adults-only wedding is a common choice, and guests are free to decline. What feels rude is the delivery: capital letters, a lecture, or exceptions for some families and not others.
How do you politely tell guests no kids at the wedding?
Let the names on the invitation do most of the work, add one warm sentence in the details, and answer questions privately. Give one reason at most, such as the venue or the late hour.
Should you mention no children on the save the date?
Usually not in words: address the save the date to the invited adults, and the names tell parents enough. For a destination wedding, a short line ("An adults-only celebration; details to follow") gives parents months to arrange care.
What if guests RSVP with their children anyway?
Message them privately and soon: thank them, say the wedding is adults only for every family, and ask them to update their reply (see message 22). Personal links with a set number of places make it rare.
