Carved jaali shutters pushed open, and mehndi that draws itself
A palace in Rajasthan on the evening of the festivities. A pair of carved sandstone jaali shutters closes the window, lamplight glowing through every opening of their lattice, with strands of marigold and rose hung on either side: your guests swipe across them, they give under their finger and swing open, the strands sway out and light floods the arch. Inside the window the mehndi draws itself round your names in dark paste, then settles into its deep orange stain, and the courtyard opens at dusk as the diyas light one by one. The countdown burns in four clay lamps, the date is hidden in a henna mandala for guests to rub free, the day hangs as windows on a marigold thread, each festivity in its own colour, and every yes drops a garland over the reply.
